What a Week–TYMDWB in Print and in the State House

20 Mar

I thought the most exciting time for TYMDWB would be when we released it, but this has been a pretty incredible week.

First, our good friend Dan Trittschuh, who was actually with me the day I was diagnosed with NHL, wrote a column about our shared experience in Suburban News Publications, one of our local weeklies. It was an amazing column–bringing me so clearly back to that time and helping me remember how much I value our friendship.

And then I open the Friday mail and discover a proclamation from our Ohio State Rep. John Patrick Carney (22nd district) who authored a State House honor for TYMDWB. I was absolutely speechless. What an amazing thing to have happen, and I am so grateful to Rep. Carney for supporting our book and efforts to help those with cancer.

Some local Columbus orders for the book came in this week, which I think may have been spurred by Dan’s column. As grateful as I am for those purchases, I also know they may mean another family is facing cancer. So to all those who order I say, “Thank you, and we are here for you.”

“The Year My Dad Went Bald” goes to college

24 Feb

Had a great time yesterday meeting Maryanna D. Klatt. Ph.D.
Assistant Professor Clinical Allied Medicine and her students. Was invited by Maryanna to speak to her the Evolving Art and Science of Medicine class at The Ohio State University about “The Year My Dad Went Bald,” and the healing process that went along with the creation of the book. It was a great opportunity to share my story with some future doctors. They had lots of great questions and seemed to be appreciative to meet someone who has been though cancer and was willing to share their story.

This Week News Profiles TYMDWB

27 Jan

Nicole, Brian and Danny pose for This Week News.

Kevin Parks of This Week News (Clintonville) wrote a fabulous profile on TYMDWB for the Jan. 28 edition. We are so honored by this coverage and the response to it! We heard also from Brian’s oncologist, Dr. Andrew Grainger, who will now share this great resource with the patients at Columbus Oncology and Hematology!

Companions of Hope

12 Jan

We had a fantastic meeting today with The James Cancer Center  Companions of Hope, an amazing program offered through Ohio State University that provides support for families and kids who are facing a parent’s cancer diagnosis. They were so supportive of “The Year My Dad Went Bald,” and will be offering it to their families who have father’s diagnosed with cancer. We are grateful to them for their support, and aslo for the chance to contribute in some way to such a worthwhile program.

If anyone needs their help, I hope you will contact them at 614.293.4138!

Finding an Audience

11 Dec

Went to see our new oncologist, Dr. Kristie Blum, yesterday at the James Cancer Center and continue to be amazed at how many lives are touched by cancer–many in a far more dramatic way than was ours. Although we wish it was not the case, this means that the audience for “The Year My Dad Went Bald” is likely more far-reaching that we could ever imagine.

We plan to send a complimentary copy of the book to the various oncology centers around our area, to doctor offices and support services. We are excited to partner with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which will help us promote the book in exchange for per-book donations, and we also promise donations to Hockey Fights Cancer for every book sold.

We have a lot of other plans to share the message of “The Year My Dad Went Bald,” but would love to hear from you any suggestions on getting the book into the hands of those who need it most. Any thoughts?
